Floating sargassum seaweed mats off Dry Tortugas serve as surface nurseries thriving with life.
Pulley Ridge
I have yet to document Pulley Ridge, an important reef in this region of the eastern Gulf. Approximately 155 miles west of Cape Sable, this deepwater ridge was once a line of barrier islands. At 200 feet deep, Pulley Ridge has a surprisingly dense array of scleractinian corals and tropical fishes. Platelike sunray lettuce coral is one of the most dominant species seen there. Marine scientists contend that the profusion of life at this depth is unusual. The Loop Current is one possible explanation for this unusually deep coral reef community in the Gulf of Mexico.
